No-Till Corn Yields Burney and Brown Named 1984-85 Homecoming Sweethearts This year we see an increase in “No-Till” corn yields; almost double. This year there was between 400-500 acres of no till corn in the county, James K. Spruill and Clifford Toler with the majority of the acres. This was the first time for James Spruill and he was well satisfied with his results. His good land produced 150 bushels of corn per acre. Clifford Toler’s yield was off of the 170 bushel yield of 1983. Both Toler and Spruill were late planting their crop. The worms enjoyed Toler’s crop while not substantially damaging Spruill’s Crop. Both Toler and Spruill had good weed control. Most of Toler’s corn was on poorly drained land and those nine plus inches of rain in July slowed the growth of the corn due to the higher than normal water table. Both of those no-till corn crops were planted in soybean stubble. There was no land preparation prior to corn planting. Leon Webster and Wil Totten, computer programmers, and Pete Benner, office manager for Atlantic/Richfield; and Mac Jackson, a contract drafter, decided to drive to Wilson, N.C. and tour the Coastal towns to Wilmington, N.C. back to Raleigh and then to Wilson. The men said they used part of their vacation each year to do biking tours. They claim it is good exercise, a chance to meet people, and a chance to see the country side at a slow pace. Biking in North Carolina is fast becoming a favorite pastime with Bike Trails throughout the state.
